About the Eric Trump Foundation:

“The Eric Trump Foundation was founded about 5 years ago by Eric Trump and friends to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – which was recently rated the #1 children’s hospital in the world!

St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made there have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

With research and patient care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today’s most gifted researchers are able to do science more quickly. Researchers at the center are published and cited more often in high impact publications than any other private pediatric oncology research institution in America.

St. Jude is a place where many doctors send some of their sickest patients and toughest cases. It is truly a place where cutting-edge research and revolutionary discoveries happen every day, and is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.

ETF’s last event, the 5th Annual Westchester Golf Invitational, raised an astounding $1.2 million in donations in one day- the most raised by a golf charity event in the US in 2011!

The upcoming Hearts for Children Charity Social was created so that ETF and Orange County Young Executives could bring awareness to the foundation’s cause in the Orange County area.

The more people who understand what St. Jude does, the more lives we can save!”

February, a “Month of Love”

28 Feb

Like any gal, we here at Make Charity Cool swoon over a good love story.  So, when we heard of the “Month of Love” campaign by the Best Friends Animal Society, we had to highlight this special organization.

The Best Friends Animal Society, the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary, opened their second and only west coast animal rescue center in Mission Hills, CA!

According to Best Friends, “Year-one targeted goals for this new undertaking are to find homes for a minimum of 3,000 L.A. city shelter animals and provide 6,000 spay/neuter procedures for the community, along with a variety of special events and community outreach programs. It all adds up to a massive effort to take Los Angeles no-kill.”

(Julie Marie Berman – two time Emmy winning actress from General Hospital, co-founder and Director of Design of Better Buddies)

Through its partnership with BFAS,  Better Buddies has dedicated the month to donating beds to the homeless animals. February has been dedicated the “Month of Love” by the business as it plans to match all contributions made through their site to the purchase of beds for these animals.

“Our beds will, no doubt, help these animals get good night’s sleep, but also offer comfort and security, making them more likely to be adopted…and that’s the ultimate goal. Also, we are thrilled to have a photographer and videographer on site the day of delivery so through Facebook you can watch your contribution in action and share in the excitement it really brings.”

“Bullying… We’re Kickin’ It” Event Coverage

In a previous post, we here at Make Charity Cool, let you know how much we are irritated by bullying and featured a special event that you just had attend.

On Tuesday, October 18th, New York socials came together to “kick bullying” at The Ainsworth for Recess in Manhattan, a fundraiser to support the ‘Bullying…We’re Kickin’ It national campaign.

The evening was organized by our great friend, Steven Beltrani, of CharityHappenings / Social Life Magazine and hosted a fabulous group of people: Peter Davis, Devorah Rose, Lauren Rae Levy, Robert Fowler, Nicholas Gruber, Brian Mazza, Matthew Berritt, Micah Jesse, Amanda Slavin, Zev Eisenberg, Courtney Dawson, Ronny Baroody, Jamie Cooper, Cristina Civetta, Lisa Yom, Alexis Feldman, Bryn Poulos, Scott Jensen, Christopher Gustafson, Lizzi Bickford, Justin Baer, among others.

Other attendees included Calvin Klein, Tinsley Mortimer, Miss New York 2011′s Kaitlin Monte, Style Network’s Briella Calafiore, and Malik So Chic, just to name a few.

Now, there is a rumor swirling around Manhattan that Calvin Klein made a promise to friend, Steven Beltrani, during the event to match the money raised…”Ba-nan-as!”  Just another reason why we love the fabulous designer!

A percentage of all bar proceeds from the evening will support the “BULLYING… We’re Kickin’ It national campaign.’

The campaign is based upon protecting youngsters and preventing at-risk situations that arise from verbal, physical, emotional, sexual and racial bullying as well as the dangers that follow from one-on-one incidences, group assaults, Internet attacks, and inappropriate text messaging.

Paige Management Group and The Ainsworth have also streamlined with the fundraiser, donating a percentage of the bar proceeds to the organization.

Let’s continue to “kick it”! Let’s stop bullying!

Invite Alert: A Professor’s Quest to Save Breasts

15 Oct

A Professor’s Quest to Save Breasts? Yes, you heard that right!

Fernando Uribe, a Berkley College professor and candidate for the New Jersey State Assembly, is on a mission to do just that!

We recently had Q&A with Fernando about his upcoming event, which will be held tonight, in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Who you are, your profession, your background/ where you grew up/came from?

My name is Fernando Uribe.  I am professor at Berkeley College teaching Criminal Justice and I also teach Political Science at Montclair State University in the evenings.  I am a 1st generation American growing up in Hudson County here in New Jersey.  I currently reside in Union City, NJ.  I am a product of the Rutgers University system. I obtained my undergraduate degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology at the New Brunswick campus.  I obtained my graduate degrees in Criminal Justice and Global Affairs at the Newark campus.  I have been involved with the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes since 2007.  I organize and host yearly fundraisers for both charities.  Specifically, I have been awarded in both 2010 and 2011, with being a Top Walker in my county for the March of Dimes as well as raising over $2000 each year for the American Cancer Society.  Currently, I am a candidate for the New Jersey State Assembly in the 33rd Legislative District, which is compromised of the following municipalities: Union City, Hoboken, Weehawken and Jersey City.

What inspired you to do this event and to get involved with charity, in general?

I have friends who have suffered from breast cancer as well as seeing colleagues over the years suffer from this dreaded disease.  I take great pride in volunteering for the American Cancer Society since 2007 and this year is my 5th edition of the PROFESSOR’S QUEST TO SAVE BREASTS fundraiser I host every October the night before the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Jersey City, NJ

I am hosting my event this year @ Liberty Bar and Grill in Hoboken, NJ.  Their address is 61 14th Street, Hoboken, NJ.  The event is from 10PM-3AM.

Here is the Facebook Event Page, which has received considerable attention:

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=241216819249916

The RSVP list is growing daily and the turnout should be great, as it always is.

I urge readers to please check out the event page for all the details.  There will be plenty of drink specials, but the date auction will make for a fun evening.  I am auctioning off contestants for dates and all proceeds from the winning bids will go to breast cancer research.  Also, I am auctioning off spa packages to the audience.

What do you see as the biggest issue we should be
facing/helping/improving right now?  And how do you think people
should/can help?

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is important to dedicate time to raising funds to fight this dreaded disease.  I take great pride in organizing this event and while it is a lot of work, it so rewarding at the end of the evening after seeing the turnout and the amount raised.  Many people don’t exert this sort of effort for such a cause, but charity work is important and we must take the necessary steps to help people.  Over time, the name of my event and/or simply hosting a date auction to raise money has brought some scrutiny upon me, especially from colleagues, but I’m not concerned about it.  Seriously, should I bake cookies and stand outside somewhere with a gallon of milk to raise funds?  There’s nothing wrong with that, but I just prefer to engage something fun and harmless.  It’s truly sad when people become petty in their criticism when they should be focusing their energies in being positive and trying to help their community.  Defeating breast cancer is very important to me and more people should be on board in taking the necessary steps to raise funds as well as promote awareness.  Being negative and overly critical doesn’t solve anything.  As I said earlier, I take great pride in my charity work and will continue to do so.

What are your suggestions for people of any age looking to get
involved in charity work?

I always stress the importance of charity work to everyone I know.  My first suggestion is to pick a charity you feel comfortable with.  Do some research on it, contact them and start setting up a fundraiser at a local establishment.  It is a lot of work as I alluded to earlier, but it feels great to contribute like this.  It is a great way to network and get people involved in such a rewarding activity.

Do you have anything else you’d like to say to the Make Charity Cool audience?

I would like to thank Make Charity Cool for giving me this opportunity in reaching such a massive reading audience.  For anyone living in the NJ/NYC area, please come out on Saturday October 15, 2011 to Liberty Bar and Grill located @ 61 14th  Street in Hoboken, NJ for the PROFESSOR’S QUEST TO SAVE BREASTS! The event starts @ 10pm!  The date auction will be fun and I am also auctioning off spa packages.  All proceeds from this event benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.  Once again, please check the event page I posted above for all the details and let’s defeat breast cancer.

Invite Alert: Recess in Manhattan to support ‘BULLYING…We’re Kickin’ It National Campaign’

30 Sep

By: Stefanie Cronin

As many of you may know already, bullying has been an issue that strikes me to the core and bothers the hell out of me. Like so many of you, I too have been bullyied as a high school student. I was taunted for reasons that I didn’t think ever could be possible. First,  I was smart and dedicated to getting good grades, and second, because I stood up for what I believed in.

As I sat one day, taking an important exam, I had a group of students want to cheat off me. Sounds childish and light-hearted, right?  I politely shook my head and declined, because I worked hard and believed above all, that it was wrong.

Well, what began was definitely not light-hearted. What started with a simple kick to the back of my chair, led to things being thrown in my hair or at me, name calling, harassment, to me actually not wanting to go to my favorite class or even my own graduation.

How could I let them win? It was hard, and it took alot, including my brother stepping in, as well as my family involving the school and one of the bully’s families. Eventually, it stopped and left me with a scar of the whole incident.  But, for so many children & teenagers these days, the ending of each individual story is drastically different. Suicide is not the answer and this must be taught. Life is precious and it will get better. I promise.

Sitting there, as a Senior year high school athlete who never thought she’d be the target of bullying, I’ll be honest,  I didn’t think it was going to get better.   But, it has.

I have an amazing  family & unbelievable number of quirky friends around me who inspire me on a daily basis. I have 2 dogs that bring me such joy and simple love.   I’ve had a blessed career and unbelievable experiences that I am beyond thankful for. I’ve loved and lost, and loved again.  More importantly, every time I fell or got knocked down, I got back up. You have to fight. And, if you see someone struggling, you have to help them.

I won’t tell you, that life is easy, because it’s definitely not. I’ve definitely been to hell and back. You are sure to get some scratches, bumps, and a black eye or two along the way.  It will get better, I promise, and wounds do heal as we get stronger and with time…and after you get through it all, you’ll be left with some beautiful scars.

With that being said, and having shared my story, please join us at this special event…
